尻別第一発電所は1921年7月に王子製紙株式会社によって、工場を稼働する電力の確保のために運転が開始されました。
この発電所で発電された電気は、送電線で苫小牧まで送られていましたが、2014年4月から東京の丸ビルへ送電されています。
尻別第1発電所は、北海道のニセコ町の王子製紙発電所として、経済産業省の近代化産業遺産に登録されています。
